This coin commemorates the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Vatican. The Vatican is the smallest internationally acknowledged state in the world. The Lateran Treaty, signed in 1929 byPope Pius XI and the Italian state recognized the independence of the Vatican.

In the inner circle shows the perimeter walls of the Vatican. These were built in the years 847-855 during the reign of Pope Leo IV and are known as the Leonine wall. Also shown is the famous cathedral – St. Peters.

Around the left side of the inner circle is the inscription : ”75. ANNO DELLA STATO”. The year of attaining independence and the year of issue (1929-2004) are shown at around one to two o’clock. The mint sign is at three o’clock. The name of the designer (VERONI) and the initials of the engraver (L.D.S.Inc.) appear around three to four o’clock.

Finally the name of the issuing state – CITTA’ DEL VATICANO is at the bottom of the outer circle. This would no longer be allowed as it is thought the twelve stars of the EU should be continuous and not interrupted – thus emphasising the unity of the EU.
