This is the ninth coin of the UNESCO World Heritage series in Spain and features Santiago de Compostela which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985.

It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Christians and this together with its urban integrity and cultural significance regarding the Middle Ages led to its nomination.

The "Camino de Santiago" is part of a network of ancient European pilgrimages that converge at the tomb of St. James in Galicia.

The coin, designed by Alfonso Morales Muñoz, reproduces the sculpture of Santiago. He is shown in the middle of the Puerta Santa (Sacred Gate). This is in the West Facade of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Five scallops appear on the hat and cape of Santiago.

On the edge of the inner circle, in bold type, from eight to ten o’clock, is the name of the issuing country “ESPAÑA". Under the left columns of the Puerta Santa we see the year of issue – 2018 and immediately below that is the mint mark.
