This coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the death of the famous Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

He was a painter in the Italian High Renaissance and was active in Florence and also in the papal court in Rome.

He also worked in the capacity of architect diring the building of St. Peter's Basilica.

The motif of the coin shows a part of a fresco of the Madonna di Casa Santi. This fresco was painted by Raffaello in 1498 when he was only 15 years old.

Around the edge of the inner circle, running from twelve o'clock to around three o'clock is an inscription showing the country of issue - "SAN MARINO". Next to the nape of the neck of the Madonna are the date of death and the year of issue - 1520 2020.

The mint mark (that of thre Italian mint) "R" is seen between eight and nine o'clock. The initials "A.M." of the coin designer Annalisa Masini are to be seen at four o'clock.

Finally at the bottom we have a bold inscription of the honoured artist "RAFFAELLO"
