The coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

After several independence wars Italy was finally united in 1861 and on 17th March of that year Viktor Emanuel II was crowned in Turin as the king of Italy.

The main motif of the coin consists of three flags. These represent all previous three unification elections  - 1911,1961 and 2011. This also symbolizes a connection between the different generations. Around the top of the inner circle is the inscription “150 DEL’UNITA’ D’ITALY”.

The issuing country is shown by the I superimposed on R at four o’clock. The mint mark is at six o’clock. The initials and mark of the engraver “ELF INC” are seen at five o’clock.

The date of unification and the date of issue – 1861 2011 – are shown in the bottom half of the coin with two arrows to the right of 2011 pointing towards the future.
