The wolf has inhabited Estonian forests and swamps since time immemorial.
Characteristics ascribed to the wolf include the courage to bravely defend its territory as well as respect and loyalty to its family and pack. In addition the wolf is seen as enjoying seclusion and being be at one with nature.
These laudable qualites are also deemed to be characteristic of Estonia and its people and hence the Eurasian wolf was chosen as the Estonian national animal in 2018.
