The wolf has inhabited Estonian forests and swamps since time immemorial.

Characteristics ascribed to the wolf include the courage to bravely defend its territory as well as respect and loyalty to its family and pack. In addition the wolf is seen as enjoying seclusion and being be at one with nature.

These laudable qualites are also deemed to be characteristic of Estonia and its people and hence the Eurasian wolf was chosen as the Estonian national animal in 2018.

The Motif of the coin shows a howling wolf, head raised heavenwards, standing on a fallen tree tunk and facing to the left.

This is shown against a backdrop of the forest and a srarry sky.

Around the edge of the inner circle from eleven o'clock to one o'clock is the inscription "CANIS LUPUS".

Again around the edge of inner circle between nine o'clock and eight o'clock is the name of issuing State "EESTI" (Estonia) and between is the year of issue "2021".
