Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, anatomist, mechanic, engineer and natural philosopher and is considered one of the most famous polymaths of all time.

The coin depicts an angel painted by Leonardo (without the halo shown in the original).

The  painting, "The baptism of Christ" is by Andrea del Verrocchio but Leonardo who at that time was an apprentice under Verrocchio is believed to have painted the angel and some of the sky in the background. The painting was was created around 1475.

 The work is today in the Uffizi in Florence. The circular inscription reads "SAN MARINO" "1519 LEONARDO 2019". On the bottom right is "R", the mintmark of the Italian Mint, on the left the ligation "UP" of the initials of the mint designer Uliana Pernazza.
